It’s not just dancing, it’s a passion

By Yesenia Dillon

What would those football games and pep rallies be without the pom girls, now known as the dance team. Dancing to some people is just something to do when you’re at a party or with friends and want to be a little spontaneous. For others it’s a passion and something they love to do.

Captain Kalli LeVasseur, senior, has been dancing since she was three. “I’ve been dancing since I was three but I never liked it till I was in eighth grade,” LeVasseur said. When she was little she loved watching the pom girls and that’s what really inspired her to join.

Katelyn Bunn, junior, has been dancing since she was five and her main reason for joining was the fact that she was clumsy when she was little.

Bailey Hopkins, sophomore, has been dancing since she was five also. “Dancing is basically the only sport I do so I thought it would be fun to join.”

Dancing is not all fun and games though, there’s a lot of work that goes into it. Bunn says she dislikes having practice at six in the morning for nine months. LeVasseur gets frustrated when she can’t get a move down. “It gets really frustrating when I can’t get a step or something right.”  It can also affect their schoolwork. Hopkins says that it’s hard to balance it all out, and you just have to find a way to get it all in. LaVasseur said, “I have class three times and I teach dance, so I just get tired and not do my homework or forget to study.”

Of course though you do have your memorable moments. Most of the girls like to go to Pom Camp over the summer because it gives the girls some time to bond and have fun.

Dance can be a competitive sport. LeVasseur said, “It can get really competitive, especially at state because we are in the toughest rank.” Even though it gets competitive, its LeVasseur’s favorite place to perform, “Competitions are my favorite because you get to be a little more crazy because you’ve been working so hard for that one moment.” Bunn says her favorite place to perform is at the football stadium here at MHS. Hopkins likes the high school gym because it makes the turns a lot easier.

Now of course all sports have a special way to get pumped up, dance is not different. “We’re just crazy before we perform, we also have this thing where we get in a huddle and point our toes to the center. Then we wish each other good luck and have fun with our routines.”
