Volleyball Girls Start Off Shaky, but Trample over the Competition

The girls’ volleyball season started August 27 at home against Bettendorf. Although they suffered a loss against the Bulldogs, the rest of the season has been a promising one. All three teams hold good records; varsity being 12-3. The freshmen gold team is also holding their own with a 9-0 record. The season has just begun, but the girls hope to be stronger than ever this year.
Before the season began, each volleyball team had their own obstacles to overcome. Sophomore Becky Britcher said, “We had trouble staying positive and getting pumped up again after bad plays.” These problems are exactly what the teams worked on during their Muskie Volleyball Camp this summer. There, the girls learned to work as a team and take their playing skills up a notch. “As a team, we definitely improved on communicating with each other,” commented Julie Wunder, senior. Their hard work has paid off in their last few matches against opposing MAC conference teams, as the girls are playing sharper than ever.
Each girl has had her own personal accomplishments, as well. Megan Beauchamp, freshman, said, “My hitting has gotten better since I started playing high school volleyball.” Senior Haylie Franklin said her blocking has improved this season, proving to be a big help to the varsity team. Mrs. Proffitt, the new varsity coach, commented, “Some of the seniors girls have really stepped up to be leaders this year and have been playing good, smart volleyball to earn us lots of points.” The volleyball teams are dominating their conference opponents this season. They’re playing tough for their wins; with strong blocks, hard digs, and monstrous kills. Coach Proffitt said the girls appreciate the support of the student section, so keep showing up and cheering loud for the Muskie volleyball teams.
