What’s With the Media?

The media is something that affects teenagers every day, either by turning on the TV or flipping through your favorite magazine, it’s always present. Many teens think in the last decade, it has spun out of control.

“I think the main cause is the advancement in technology, those guys can take a hill and make it a mountain,” said Freshman Drake Wichers. It seems since technology has been advancing the more people rely on TV and computers. 412 billion dollars are spent on just ads alone in the U.S. yearly, that’s a lot of money going to waste that could be used for other things.

“It seems like the world just likes watching people fail at something, then making a huge deal, like the Tiger Woods scandal, it went on for to long,” said Senior Kenny Barrios. Scandals are something else that are huge in the media. Celebrities are expected to be perfect, and if they make a mistake you will hear about it. It gets a little out of hand sometimes; people get too excited about who was arrested in Hollywood, or who is using steroids in baseball.

Barrios added, “Fame isn’t as cool as its made out to be. Everyone famous is set to be so perfect these days, who wants to try and obtain that.”

“Lately, everything in TV, and music is about how cool alcohol and sex are, it gets pretty annoying when there’s not am appropriate song on the radio,” shared freshman Bailey Blake.  As big as music keeps getting every year, the more inappropriate the lyrics get. If the songs are not about drugs, they’re about sexual things. Big artists like Lil Wayne, Lady Gaga, and Kanye West all use those references in their songs. Sometimes, people don’t even realize what their saying when they sing the song, it’s just in there discreetly enough that no one really notices. That’s how a lot of things are, like advertisements and TV commercials. Each one is filled with crude humor that doesn’t stick out, but is always there. People catch onto that all the time and media makes it look like its ok.

Media is just a small part of life, and not all of it is negative. Most teens think it can definitely be improved. As things in the world keep changing, media should be the one thing that does not stay the same.
