Diamond Towns of America is holding an essay contest for MHS students with a grand prize of $100. Diamond Towns of America is a Muscatine based consulting company that helps generate an innovative way for improving the lives of people in Muscatine. Communities that are involved in Diamond Towns are considered “Client Towns”. One person from that community, who is an excellent communicator and a full time employee, is called the Community Facilitator. The Community Facilitator is a person who is full of passion to improve their community. There are Diamond Town consultants that assist with many things including, citizen involvement, community visioning, developing leadership, and cultivating talents.

Several students have taken on a task that is not a simple one. Students are given five thorough essay questions to respond to and try to persuade the Diamond Towns of America to pick theirs for many cash prizes. The deadline for submission is June 18, 2010. Caleb Fiedler, junior, decided to write about the economic slowdown and how it will modify in the future. “It’s an interesting topic and it makes me think about the future,” Fiedler said. Each of the five essay questions bring a lot of thought into the responses.

Ms. Sapp and Mrs. Hovland’s English 1 class is participating in the essay contest. “Any student in my classroom that participates will receive extra credit, anyone who doesn’t participate, it won’t count against them,” Ms. Sapp said. Mrs. Hovland and Ms. Sapp will be offering brainstorming sessions each Tuesday at 3:30-4:30 in Room 211. They will be there to help the students with ideas and editing for their essay.  “We wanted to make it available to all grade levels so each student would have an opportunity to voice their community concerns,” Sapp said. Extra credit is something to motivate the kids to be involved.
