Running With the Competition
Running With the Competition
By Jared Littlejohn
The adrenaline pumping, heart stopping beat of the runner’s cleats as they tear up the track may not appeal to some, but to others it’s something they train for day in and day out. The Muscatine track team is a very well rounded unit that could rival any of the teams currently in training. They have taken some meets by storm but also have had some close calls with Clinton and Bettendorf. Coach Mueller shed some light on who he thinks is one of their toughest competitors.
“Last year are toughest competition was Clinton and this year it is no different. They have a great team but lack in certain areas. Nevertheless, they are still a force to be reckoned with.”
Jared Hetzler an 11th grade short distance runner had the same view as Coach Mueller when discussing the topic of the toughest team competition.
“Clinton rivals us with their great assortment of long distance runners. Their 800 and two mile runners have beaten us time and time again.”
Hetzler has made his reputation as a great short distance runner by setting the 400 record and consistently dropping time and finishing in first. His fondest memory of track is going to the Drake Relays with his brother and then going to state and getting 4th with his brother.
“Track is a great way to stay in shape for football and swimming. It offers great cardio and a great team, so why not run?” said Hetzler
“Well for one, the ladies dig the runners and track has taught me the discipline I need for football and life,” said Jacob Shoultz also a short distance runner in the 9th grade.
“I believe sports have a direct impact on my life and who I am as a person, if I put time and effort into my sports and take the time to excel, it shows the kind of person I am and reflects my work ethic. Sports also prepare me for having to make hard descions in the future,” said Shoultz.
With a team of runners like this and the coaching staff we have. The Muscatine Muskies have a promising year ahead of them.
